LFC 21 Day Fast 2013
DAY 5….WILL WE NEGLECT WHAT JESUS EXPECTS!
January 11, 2013
Yesterday, we were encouraged, as we pray, to “Expect” blessings, miracles and healing that can only come from The Lord!
But have we also asked ourselves, “What things does Jesus “Expect” from us? There are several things that scripture reveals to us concerning God’s expectations of us, His children. One that certainly comes to mind leads me to today’s devotion.
JESUS EXPECTS US TO FAST!
Matthew 6:16-18 (KJV) Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Notice that Jesus didn’t say IF you fast, which indicates that His followers had a choice whether or not to fast; He said, “WHEN you fast”, which makes it very clear that he EXPECTS His followers to fast.
We know that every disciple of Christ helps those in need. We also understand that Kingdom People pray. Now Jesus says, Kingdom people also fast. Helping the weak and poor, praying and fasting are not works for salvation. They are things we do because we are saved. We must be careful not to interpret fasting as a choice. Fasting is not about a decision on our part, its about submission.
Right fasting is meant to give up something (it always starts with food) for the sake of something better. Your growling stomach reminds you that you want more of God than what the world has to offer. Your headache or irritability reminds you to look past physical discomfort and emotional distress and look to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith.
A VERY IMPORTANT POINT!
There is one concern about having a corporate or church-wide fast and it is that people may somehow feel pressured into fasting. I want to remind you, LFC opens 21 days for people to seek God and respond to HIS voice on how, what and why you should fast–and how long! Don’t fast just because the church or your friend or family member is–fast because you’ve prayed and heard from God.
You see, the three weeks we set aside at the beginning of the year should not be the only time we fast.
Throughout the year, when you are seeking an answer, needing healing or desiring to push through the world’s chaos and get closer to God–that is a perfect time to fast! It could be a day, a meal or a type of food but it must be because you want to replace what you gave up and fill that void with the presence of Almighty God.
Fasting and prayer definitely gets God’s attention and that is what we want.
God responds to fasting and prayer! Fasting prepares us to receive what God has for us and that is what we want. Fasting builds our faith and sets us up for God’s provision and protection and that is what we want.
Go ahead-talk to God and tell Him the desires of your heart. Show him by your fast the you are serious about submitting to Him. Then get ready to be blessed before, during and after you receive what God has promised you!
