This Week’s Big Christian Word: REDEMPTION
From the Free Online Dictionary (Farley) I found 5 definitions for: Redemption.
1. The act of redeeming or the condition of having been redeemed.
2. Recovery of something pawned or mortgaged.
3. The payment of an obligation, as a government’s payment of the value of its bonds.
4. Deliverance upon payment of ransom; rescue.
5. Christianity: Salvation from sin through Jesus’s sacrifice.
Definition #5 is obviously what we’re going to explore so let’s use the first four definitions to help us “uncover” this important and God-given treasure called: REDEMPTION.
When I was growing up in church we sang a song entitled “Redeemed”. One phrase I’d sing to the top of my lungs, “Oh, I’m redeemed by love divine. Glory, glory, Christ is mine”. I really didn’t know what being redeemed meant-I just knew it was good because when the church sang it, everybody got real happy.
Redemption is derived from the latin root word meaning “to buy back”. The Greek root means “to loose or set free”.
To the Christian REDEMPTION means: being set free from the bondage of sin and that Jesus, and only Jesus paid the ransom or price required to free us. How much did our eternal freedom from sin cost? Look to the cross for your answer: Jesus paid it all by dying on the cross as “The Sacrifice” that had to be made for our sins.
So let’s look at our four definitions and see just how wonderful and amazing it is to be “redeemed” by Christ.
Def #1. “the condition of being redeemed”. If you have a condition, what you are describing is your “present state of being”. We can think medically and hear phrases like “critical, serious, fair, stable or good”. Spiritually there are only two conditions we find ourselves in when we stand before God……saved (having accepted Christ and now free from sin) or lost (having rejected Christ and still bound in sin). What is your “spiritual condition right now?
Def #2: “recovery of something pawned or mortgaged”. Your sin “pawned” away your eternal life. The problem is you can’t afford the price it takes to get it back. But Jesus already paid the price at Calvary–all you have to do to be free is to ask Him into your heart and give yourself completely to Him!
Def #3: “the payment of an obligation”. Everyone MUST pay for their sin….or ask Jesus, who has already fulfilled the obligation sin takes, to pay for it. Sin carries with it an obligation that you alone cannot fulfill-the price is too high! For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23 KJV)
Def #4: “Deliverance upon payment of ransom; rescue”. Simply put, when you accept Christ and allow Him to “redeem” you…..he “delivers” and gives you your life back! You were a prisoner of sin and Satan; but Jesus rescued you and now you are Free!
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36 KJV)
The world tries to get us to buy into the notion that we can “redeem ourselves”. That somehow we can make things right all on our own. But true Redemption only comes through our savior Jesus Christ. Our Redeemer Lives!
If you are eternally redeemed then Praise The Lord! If you aren’t you can be redeemed…today! Pray right now and accept Jesus into your life.
